Unlocking the Secrets of the Argan Tree: What Its DNA Tells Us About Argan Oil
September 27, 2026
The American Moroccan Competencies Network (AMCN) is proud to highlight a significant milestone achieved by two of our distinguished members, Prof. Abdelmajid Kassem and Prof. Khalid Meksem. Following a dedicated research effort launched in 2013, their team published the reference genome assembly for the argan tree (Argania spinosa) on September 26, 2026, in the journal Plants. Endemic to southwestern Morocco, the argan tree is a vital ecological buffer against desertification, a deep-rooted symbol of national heritage, and an economic engine supporting rural women's cooperatives through the production of prized argan oil.
This significant genetic discovery provides the molecular blueprint behind the argan tree's resilience to extreme drought, while unveiling the genetic pathways responsible for the unique lipid and nutritional profile of argan oil. By decoding its genome, this research lays the groundwork for advanced conservation strategies, selective breeding for climate adaptation, and sustainable agricultural practices to protect Morocco's iconic ecosystem for future generations.
